# Rate limits

> How many requests you can make, the headers that tell you where you stand, and how to stay under the limit.

| Who | Limit |
| - | - |
| Each API key | 60 requests per minute |
| Requests with a key Heliyos does not recognise | 20 requests per minute per IP address |

The limit is a rolling one-minute window. Every request counts, including ones that fail.

## Headers

Every response carries your current standing:

| Header | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `X-RateLimit-Limit` | Requests allowed in the window. |
| `X-RateLimit-Remaining` | Requests left in the current window. |
| `X-RateLimit-Reset` | When the window resets, as a Unix timestamp in seconds. |

Above the limit the API answers `429` with `error.code` `RATE_LIMITED` and a `Retry-After` header: the number of seconds to wait before you try again.

```http theme={"dark"}
HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests
Retry-After: 12
X-RateLimit-Limit: 60
X-RateLimit-Remaining: 0
```

## Staying under the limit

* **Page with the largest `limit`** an endpoint allows, rather than many small pages.
* **Prefer list calls to many single gets.** A list returns most of what a get does.
* **Spread background jobs** over time instead of bursting.
* **Use one key per system.** Each key has its own budget, so a busy sync does not starve another integration.
* **Back off on `429`.** Wait `Retry-After` seconds, then continue. See [Errors](https://docs.heliyos.ai/api-reference/errors.md#retrying-safely).

Need a higher limit for a large import or sync? Email [soham@heliyos.ai](mailto:soham@heliyos.ai) with your workspace and the volume you expect.
